Many decades ago, we were told that whole foods are healthy and keep us in the supreme state of sound health. But, the story changed in the last few decades when the campaign for healthy foods shifted from whole foods to new, superfoods like green tea, quinoa, oats, smoothies, kales, seeds, chia, sunflower, pumpkins, sesame, hemp and so on.
The point is that this campaign is little in the interest of human health but more about the improvement of sales going on in the market. That’s why everyone is fooling us with lots of hype, selling their products and ideas to us and the real identity of Healthy food. Just so you know, the health industry is about 4.2 trillion dollars which is equivalent to 5.3 per cent of the global output. There is a lot of confusion about what to eat and lots of people don’t know where to turn. Today, we want to show some of the foods that are overhyped and the best way to deal with the present situation of the media and the world of health and wellness.
Green Tea
Green tea is one of the leading health and wellness products with the highest number of sales. It’s sometimes referred to as the elixir of health. Some people go all out to convince us that when you take three cups of green tea daily, you will enjoy unlimited health benefits. You can burn your fat, prevent diabetes, improve brain cognition and build a preventive wall between yourself and cancer. All these are facts around green tea that have made it one of the best-selling health and wellness products. Well, how close to the truth are these claims? Maybe very close or far from the truth. What’s more important is to acknowledge that these benefits are not direct. Green tea doesn’t help you lose weight; it only increases your metabolism, which almost every other known tea can do for you. As for cancer prevention, maybe we can elude that to the antioxidant property. Anyway, other teas also have the property. What we are trying to say is that you can take green tea or any tea of your choice. However, you shouldn’t depend on it solely for all the benefits listed behind it, or you might put your health in a mess.
Gluten-Free Products
This is another diet related health issue that is all the rage today. The call for staying gluten-free is now high to the extent that it seems like a food that contains gluten is a natural poison that can send you to the grave. Apparently, that’s not the reality. Gluten is a protein found in some carbohydrate foods like wheat, barley, rice etc. None of these foods poses a negative threat to our health. But the adverts are saying we should stay away from gluten. Without any doubt, you may have to avoid gluten if you are sensitive to it or have celiac disease. However, if you are not a victim of these two scenarios, then there’s no sin in consuming gluten-containing foods. The worst part is that gluten-free products are many times more expensive than their gluten-containing counterparts. Nevertheless, many people have been sold the idea and are putting a fortune into the gluten-free market.
Almond and soy milk
We are also told to stop drinking cows’ milk. What could be the reason for that? They surely have something to say. But before we hear them out, we have to remind you of the alternatives many people now have in their fridge; almond and soya milk. Interestingly, just as predicted, the sales of these milks right now are rising day by day. Are they better for our health than cow milk? Nutrition-wise, cows’ milk contains more beneficial nutrients than almond and soy milk. The only valid reason why you might want to give priority to almond and soy milk over cow milk is when you’re lactose intolerant or a vegan. If you’re neither of these two, the media and advertisements should not be able to stop you from taking your cow milk. The list goes on and on till almost every good food is wiped out of the list, and you have to spend all your hard-earned money buying expensive foods that you don’t necessarily need.
When advertising promises you that some foods will perform a miracle on your health, you should learn to take it with a pinch of salt (not so seriously). Don’t forget that these people are paid to get into your brain and push out the money in your pocket to accept a belief that might not even help your health in any way. Here’s the truth; if anyone wants to stay healthy, they should go for whole foods as that’s nature’s best gift to us. Whole foods are the source of healthy nutrients that the body needs. You don’t need to doubt yourself or lose your esteem to the campaign waving in the air. Go for a calorie deficit when you want to lose weight, eat a balanced diet for proper health and enjoy your life in peace without the headache of the nonstop advertising that promises you what’s not the best for you.
