The eye is one of the most critical organs in the human body. We use it every second of the day when we are not sleeping. Since it provides us with the tremendous blessing of seeing the world around us, you will think everyone will take good care of their eyes. But, in reality, most people do the opposite.
Because they believe there’s nothing wrong with their eye, they give little to no attention to taking care and preserving it. This poor habit has cost a lot of people the precious function of the eye called “sight”. Yes! They have lost their sight.
We sure know that you don’t want this to be your portion. With a proper eye care routine, anyone can prevent the eye problems that many people face today. So, how should you and your loved one take care of your eyes to ensure that you keep them safe so that it doesn’t take a toll on you when you’re young or at old age? We have the answer for you in this blog which will show you eight ways to take good care of your eye and secure your sight. Enjoy as we dive in.
Eat healthily
The saying that you are what you eat doesn’t exclude your eye. Good eyesight begins with healthy foods on your table. There are foods that contribute greatly to your sight. You can take oily fish, oysters, leafy vegetables, and fruits like carrots and oranges. These foods contain omega fatty acids, vitamin C, carotene, zinc, lutein, and so on, all of which help to keep your eye in the optimal working condition and preserve it from old-age vision challenges. Drinking enough water is also part of healthy eating. It helps to prevent irritation usually caused by dryness of the eye. With a balanced diet, you will also control your weight and stay free from type 2 diabetes, which has robbed many people of their beloved sight.
Use sunglasses
Sunglasses are good for your sight in that they protect it from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. When you expose your eyes to the sun, the UV can cause eye problems like cataracts, cornea sunburn, muscular degradation, and many more. Aside from adding a touch to your fashion, sunglasses also give you safety from the sun effect. If you can get all this, why won’t you start using it? You can also protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or cap that covers your eye. In the case that you don’t like sunglasses with a contact lens that provides a high level of ultraviolet ray protection, you are good to go.
Use eye protection where necessary
Your eyes cannot do without protection, especially when we are working on things that pose a threat of disturbance and irritation to them. When you use dangerous chemicals that can be detrimental to your eye, always use eye-protection goggles. In some sports, such as hockey, rugby, swimming, and so on, you can easily get a severe injury. Participating in these kinds of sports demands that you wear your protective mask or other protective materials that suit the activities.
Avoid smoking
Smoking does no good to your health. We are sure this is not the first time you are hearing this. It affects your lungs, blood, heart, and other important functions of your body. And now, it’s time to know that your eyes are not safe too. Smoking exposes you to cataracts, muscular degeneration, and extreme and continuous damage to the optic nerves. As time goes on, these damages result in overall consequences of sight loss. If you have been struggling with smoking, we are here to remind you that it’s always possible to quit. You just need to keep trying and get help where necessary. And in case you haven’t given up on quitting a thought before, this is the right time to quit. Do it for your eye and overall health.
Control your time and distance on the screen
Now we are in a digital age where an average person spends about seven hours on the screen every single day. Although this might be good provided that you’re doing something productive, the resulting effect on the eye is not admirable. So, it’s important that you start having screen habits that are supportive of your eye health. Here are some of what you can do. Ensure to place your screen at least an arm’s length away from yourself and sit in a position that keeps your eye twenty degrees above the screen. That way, you will keep your high free from getting strained. Another tip you can use is the twenty-by-twenty strategy. It simply advises that you look twenty feet away after twenty minutes of focusing on your screen. You can also decide to get up from your seat and walk or stretch your body for a few minutes before getting back to the screen. This will allow proper blood flow through your body, prevent backache and set you up for better eyesight even though you work on the screen.
Stop rubbing your eyes with your hands
We use our hands almost every time on things we can’t guarantee their safety from germs. So, it’s not wise to touch or rub your eyes with your bare hands. Make sure to also wash your hands as frequently as possible to cover for those times when you’re still training yourself to stop your hands-to-eye unhealthy habit.
Get adequate sleep
We cannot overemphasize this enough. Adequate sleep gives every part of your body the chance to relax and rejuvenate from the day’s tasks, which your eye is not excluded from. Depriving yourself of adequate sleep means you’re overstressing your eye. This might cause eye problems over time. Since you don’t want that, we suggest you start making deep, quality, and adequate sleep a priority.
