Left-over foods are mostly accepted with mixed feelings. We love the fact that left-overs technically become fast foods when we are hungry but somehow, we don’t like the fact that the left-over foods do not taste as good as when they were freshly prepared. So, most times, we consumers are in a little dilemma. But, in as much as you may want to keep foods to avoid waste, there are also foods that you need to throw away. Instead of keeping these foods in order to save money, you should throw away certain foods that may do you more harm than good.

In this blog, we will be talking about those left-over foods that should be avoided for the health and safety of every individual. Even though not all left-over foods should be thrown away, there are those that MUST be thrown away. So, what are they?
Here are a few left-over foods you should never reheat for safety reasons:
Vegetables
Most people believe that reheating vegetables make them poisonous. This is not true, except they are heated too frequently. However, they can become toxic if they are not stored properly. Studies have confirmed that left-over vegetables should only be stored in temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius. They should be frozen if you plan to keep them for more than twelve hours. Veggies like celery, spinach, lettuce, and beets contain a high level of nitrate. Nitrate is not detrimental unless it is left at room temperature, and it converts to nitrite. In young children and infants, it leads to methemoglobinemia, which comes with side effects like shortness of breath, seizures, fatigue, and headaches.
Vegetable oil
Reheating left-over foods that were made with vegetable oil is highly associated with a high risk of stroke, cancers, and even heart diseases. According to recent researches, oils that have linoleic acid release some toxic compounds that can cause health problems when they are heated. The foods that contain linoleic acids include corn, soybean, canola oils, and sunflower. One of those toxins is 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal (HNE), which is a toxin derived from fatty acids.
Researches have shown that this toxin can cause serious health issues like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, liver problems, stroke, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. Even the vegetables too can release HNE if they are heated too frequently. So, for anyone that is concerned about general health, you are advised to avoid heating oils too frequently or to the point of smoking. It is much better to use it one time.
Rice
Uncooked rice contains bacteria that survive the cooking processes and may be detrimental to the health, according to the Food Standards Agency. If the rice is not stored properly or exposed to a certain temperature, the bacteria that did not die during the cooking process may multiply and cause some issues with digestion. These issues may include indigestion, diarrhea, or vomiting.
Heating the rice may not be the perfect solution, contrary to popular belief. This is because some of these bacteria have evolved and can now withstand extremely high temperatures. So, it is always better to eat up all the rice after cooking. If there are any left-overs, the left-overs should be covered and refrigerated. Do not let the rice sit at room temperature longer than an hour or two.
You should also drink water after eating. But what kind of water do you take when almost every source of water is contaminated and contains harmful organisms? Well, ionised water is the answer.

Now, we have been able to identify those foods that should not be left-over. If we must eat them later, they have to be refrigerated to reduce the actions of bacteria. Better still, prepare what you can finish in one meal.
